(More customer reviews)For the past 4 years I've been using a Pioneer DEH-P6700MP car stereo which is almost identical to the Pioneer DEH-P670MP. I really liked the Pioneer as it seemed to really be able to liven up my 1998 Toyota Corolla factory speakers and had several features I regularly used and loved. I decided it was time to upgrade recently as my old Pioneer was having difficulty playing CDs while the AC was on, and it was making ticking sounds with many of my CDs. I decided right off the bat I was going to stick with Pioneer.
I spent a few days researching units and the main thing I kept noticing with many of the new 2010 Pioneer CD Players was the choice of going with one that had HD Radio or going with one that had Bluetooth functionality. It doesn't appear you can get a Pioneer with both. I decided to go with the HD Radio functionality due in part to the talk about how FM broadcast quality was greatly improved. (I'll post a small rant on this at the end of my review.)
It seems like all Pioneers have the ability to read MP3 CDs still which is great, but one of the nicer additions is the USB port on the front. You can plug in your iPod, Zune, or USB thumb drive and play music off it instead of burning a CD or MP3 CD. It also works for charging USB devices. I tried plugging my Black Berry 8350i into the USB slot, but it would not recognize it as media and would only charge the phone. Another input on this Pioneer head unit is the aux audio input jack on the front of the face that you can plug into with a male to male stereo audio cable. An unannounced features this unit has that will be useful for many is RDS support. The unit will display the song/artist when listening to radio stations that broadcast this information.
Installation: I thought going from one Pioneer to another would be a breeze and that the stereo wire harness would be the same as my old Pioneer. Just to be sure I contacted Crutchfield whom said many stereo manufacturers use the same harness for several years. Unfortunately I want to confirm in my review that the one from my DEH-P6700MP and the one in this new DEH-P5200HD are not the same. They look similar, but they are wired like a mirror image of each other and will not fit each other. *A note to the beginners, if you've still got a factory stereo in your vehicle, do yourself a favor and buy a harness adapter so you do not have to cut the factory wiring in the dash. That way if you ever go to sell your vehicle or you decide you do not like the stereo, you can just disconnect the harness and put the factory stereo back in.
I've been using the Pioneer DEH-P5200HD for a few weeks now and I like the unit a lot. Many of the various equalizer settings are the same as what was available on my old unit, and MP3 CD playback is about the same as well. Having the USB slot on the front is extremely convenient and I use it frequently to plug in a 8gb USB thumb drive full of songs. When you pull out the drive and plug it back in, the unit remembers where you were at in the last song and picks right back up. One major thing that takes some getting used to is the control knob on the radio. It seems to control everything in that one knob and it takes time to get used to. The remote control will help ease you into things as all the buttons are easily spelled out on it. It's also worth noting the remote is identical to my previous Pioneer remote and both were even cross-compatible.
Pros:
-Same fantastic EQ options Pioneer is known for. Includes bass frequency filtering options.
-USB & Aux input on the face
-USB input plays immediately when you plug in a USB drive, it also remembers what file and where it was at when the device was last plugged into it.
-iPod control from the face or remote
-RDS support for showing titles of songs from broadcast radio
-No lights and animated character distractions flashing all over the display.
Cons:
-Face detaches to the left side instead of flipping down which may be harder to remove depending on your dash
-HD Radio is not much of an improvement in quality of FM radio.
-USB input when reading from a USB thumb drive appears to read the folder order from last to first. (Song order is also affected if you add more songs to a folder later.)
-Control knob is an awkward all in one with a bit of a learning curve.
Do you remember upgrading from a tube TV to a flat screen? Do you remember the difference in picture quality? HD Radio is NOT that same upgrade. The HD FM radio broadcast quality is almost the same as what you've heard for years except now you don't get static, instead you get cutting in and out for seconds at a time when the signal starts getting weaker. Sometimes you hear the radio DJs talking about how much better their station sounds in HD, but the truth is there isn't much of a difference. I've read AM broadcast is hugely improved, but I have no interest in most talk radio programming so I have not tuned into any of it.
I'll try to come back and update this review once I've had some more hands on time.
*UPDATE 5/21/2010*
HD FM Radio: I've had this unit installed for a month now and have spent more time with the HD FM Radio functionality. I have turned off the blending mode that combines the HD and regular FM signals and find HD reception to be bad. I live minutes outside Houston and the reception on most the FM HD stations is extremely poor. For HD when the signal gets weak, the broadcast just cuts out all together. When I go downtown the signal is usually exceptional, but at 20 miles away from one of my frequent stations, quality becomes more miss than hit. When I drive to the southeast side of town, most the HD stations are unavailable at all. If you live inside a large city and are close to the radio stations you might enjoy HD radio, but for those of you who live in suburbs or you are far from the radio stations FM HD Radio is probably not for you.
Sound quality: I have finally decided this unit out performs my old Pioneer in sound quality. One of the custom features you can set and adjust that makes this possible is the ability to filter low bass frequencies from your 4 regular speakers. For those that like to turn up their music really loud sometimes, this can help you from blowing a speaker and also get rid of some of that extra distortion you can get from turning up the volume too much. That's not to say you can't still blow a speaker, but it should help.
Other than the HD Radio and the occasional issue with the all in one control knob accidentally getting pressed in when changing the volume, this Pioneer is a great unit. I'd definitely buy another Pioneer car stereo, they have not let me down yet. I'll update this review again if I come across anything new or something worth updating.
*UPDATE 6/22/2010*
USB Input Reading: I have finally found out what the order folders are read from USB flash drives. Apparently all folders and subfolders are read from the flash drive based on the order in which they are copied to the drive. While you would think this wouldn't be an issue, it can be an annoyance for those with multiple folders. If you select and copy multiple folders at a time to a flash drive, Windows seems to want to copy the folders from last to first. It does the same thing if you copy a folder with subfolders in it. Also if you go back and add more folders later, those will play after all the other previously copied folders.
Song playback order is also affected by the order in which they are copied. If you go back later and add songs, they will play after the previously copied songs in that folder. If you are like me and have purchased multiple albums from an artist and want to play them from oldest to newest, you'll have to copy the folders to the drive in the order you want them to play. If all this file order talk sounds like too much, the good news is that you can burn a MP3 CD with folders and they will be played in alphanumeric order without any special copying order or anything. For those of you with iPod, none of this order playback should be an issue since the iPod is actually playing the songs and sending the music to the receiver.

Pioneer DEH-P7200HD CD Receiver with HD Radio, OEL Display and iPod Control Review

Installation took about an hour, direct replacement of the factory HU. Pretty basic once you get the original HU out.
I've had my P7200HD for about a month now.
The HD sig reception is great and I've had no probs breaking/losing signal. Having the 3 row display is nice for song info, etc.
ipod {I'm using USB2.0 cable} controls are great and ipod can be controlled from HU or ipod, which is nice for passengers.
Audio control gives many options for tailoring personal tastes. I've been able to fine tune to where my factory speakers sound pretty darn good. {Still going to upgrade them though.}
I haven't tested the CD/XM/bluetooth capabilities yet, but I'm confident that they will perform as well as the rest of the system.
On a scale of 1-10 I give the P7200HD a 9.5.
The only improvement that I would have would be a dedicated ipod connection from the rear of the unit.
Would I recommend the P7200HD?

Pioneer DEH-4200UB CD Receiver with OEL Display and USB iPod Control Review

(More customer reviews)This is the best single din player I have come across. I used sony xplod series earlier and have also used kenwood but I realized when I used Pioneer that it is a class apart. I have 4X4 infinity reference speakers installed. 1st time I used my pioneer, I thought "Do I have a sub in my car that I dont know about". I mean, I could actually feel the real power of infinity without amp just by installing pioneer!!
This system is amazing. I can tune it the way I want it too. It has HPF and LPF, so if I had an amp or sub, i can make use of it. One of the best thing about this is the blue OLED screen. Though I would have loved it to be 1.5 times or 2 times bigger than what it is but its great. Lot of options to choose from. I can also setup alarm on it (though i've never used it). The sound reproduction is very clear.
Dont buy the pioneer cable for ur iphone. Your regular charging cable will work just fine.
The negative:
Only thing I dont like is the joystick which is little less on grip. But I rarely use it as I am hooked to the remote.
All in all, the best your money can buy for the price. Thumbs up and pioneer again hit jackpot with this.

Pioneer Premier DEH-P510UB iPod AM/FM/MP3/WMA/AAC Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I bought a Pioneer DEH-P510UB along with the Pioneer HD tuner in early 2009 when they came out. I was eagerly awaiting a quality deck with good radio and also AUX-IN and USB right on the faceplate of the deck. The unit sounds fabulous, even through my car's original (premium, 7 speaker) sound system with no additional amp. The radio works wonderfully, gets stations that our home tuners don't, and you can store HD subchannels as presets. I put a whole bunch of MP3-encoded songs on a 16 GB USB thumb drive and this is my primary mode of use. It's very easy, plug in the thumb drive and within seconds it's playing your music. The key to playing 1000 songs on one digital medium like a USB drive is the user interface, of course. Sadly, this is where Pioneer cut corners. There's no way to skip ahead say 50 or 100 songs, and if you want to go back to the song that played before the current one it's incredibly bad, barely works. You can put the unit into random mode, which will skip around through your music. Unlike many consumer audio players, the random algorithm seems to work well. However, this is the very worst part. If I'm in random mode and I push the button to skip to the next song, it should go to the next song randomly, NOT the next song in alphabetical order. This is a very basic and stupid mistake in the UI design and it is excruciating for the user. Stuck in the middle of one of your daughter's Spice Girls songs and don't want to listen to it? You'd think you could push "next song" and it would jump to the next song in random order. Does it? No. It goes to the next Spice Girls song, then the next .. yow.
It's a good thing the remote works as well as it does, because that one-button-does-all thing doesn't work very precisely if you're driving. To make a radio station a preset, for example, requires that you hold that button exactly in its center for several seconds until the deck realizes what you're trying to do. I have yet to accomplish this while I'm driving - some tiny swerve will make my fingertip move just barely but enough to make the thing skip to the next radio station instead of adding the current one as a preset. Sigh. The remote works much better.
It's a shame, really. This could be a really killer product and it wouldn't have cost Pioneer any money in hardware, just needed to put someone on the UI design who knows something. The manual seems large at first glance until you realize it's one of those awful written-in-every-language manuals. The English section is skimpy, the index is uselessly terse, and whatever you're looking up is certain to refer to another section which itself may refer to another section .. just plain lazy tech writing. And the font is way way tiny. I have to take off my driving glasses and put on reading glasses to read it. Needless to say I have to pull over to do this. There is supposed to be a way to enter custom EQ data using a six-band equalizer, but the crummy manual has defeated me entirely.
So it's a great product with great limitations. I'm going to keep mine, hoping Pioneer comes out with a flashable upgrade to the UI. After all, I can still have my whole damn collection on one USB drive and the unit plays them and sounds great. That's cool.

Kenwood Kdc-Mp745U CD/AM/FM/USB Receiver Review

Most seem to be saddled with 1990s technology and pathetic MP3 support unless you are willing to buy an Ipod or a satellite radio subscription. I'm still waiting for a car stereo with proper MP3 support, but this Kenwood is pretty close. Let's get down to the pros and cons:
Pro:
* Sensible MP3 support with only a few big limitations (listed below). Other MP3 players I checked out had all sorts of absurd weaknesses like one player that literally dumps all of your MP3s into a difficult-to-navigate list.
* Big and easy-to-read display.
* USB is in the rear so that you don't have a flash drive sticking out of your dash.
* Huge number of settings and options. They not only exist, but the UI of the main panel makes it easy to change the settings.
* The audio is great. In fact, the audio is too good for its own good! You can easily crank up the levels to a point that still sounds clean but overheats the player to the point it enters a safe mode where it lowers to cool down, returns to loud, lowers to cool down again etc...Cons:
* USB cannot even power a small laptop-style harddrive even though my laptop's USB port easily handles it.
* MP3 storage devices are limited to 256 folders. Even though this thing can handle a 32GB flash drive, and probably more, the 256 folder limitation is a significant, and unnecessary, barrier that seems like a relic of the 1980s that will force you to make concessions with your music library. Considering that my 32GB chips are already maxed out, you can assume there will be little point in upgrading to 64GB, 128GB, or higher flash drives during the time you will own your vehicle.
* No mute button! How can there be no mute button?
* Settings are lost when the power is completely cut. No, turning off the ignition will not lose your settings, but you will sometimes find mechanics disconnecting the battery when performing maintance.
* Must use buttons instead of a dial to change the radio station.

* Disc drive is a CD drive instead of a DVD drive. I do not expect video capabilities from this, but considering the CD format is long obsolete and DVD drives handle all of the functionality of those old drives it sure is unfortunate that the disc drive cannot handle MP3 from DVD.

* This complaint is a bit unfair but I have a Sansa Fuze MP3 player that froze the Kenwood and it had to be reset. If you connect the Sansa, then turn on the car's ignition that process seems to screw things up and it causes the headunit to freeze. It happened twice. The Kenwood never said it was compatible with the Sansa Fuze, but it was a bit odd that the Kenwood wasn't designed well enough to at least not crash when unexpected devices are connected.

1- The USB slot. I bought a 16GB microSD with elago USD adapter http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HGFKR8/ref=oss_product and virtually, this little adapter goes into the receiver and integrate with it (you can only see 5mm or 0.2 inches of the adapter sticking out). If you do not know, you think the adapter is part of the receiver.
2- The USB slot cover. Unlike those slots that have a plastic cover which will hang around if you uncover the slot, the cover of the USB slot goes inside the reciever when you uncover the adapter slot. (The Kenwood receivers do not have cover, which I do not like and some other models of pioneer have plastic cover that is annoying)
3- Easy to search and find your favorite mp3 file even if you have 16GB of mp3. Basically you can go through folders and find the folder that you like.
4- Capable of reading AAC files (at least files with .m4a extension): AAC is going to replace mp3. So it is better that your receiver have this feature.
5- Very intuitive navigation of menus: There is only one multi purpose thing that can navigate you intuitively to mostly used functions such as finding files, changing the volume, finding the radio frequency that you want and so on.
6- Very easy to install.
7- Very loud: It is louder than my previus JVC receiver. To check the loudness, I could go up to 50% volume and was afraid of losing my ears so I did not go above 50%.
Until now, I could see two cons:
1- I cannot easily attach or detach the face. You should be careful not to break one end of the face. I guess after some use, I learn how to do it.
2- You cannot have play list.
About installation:
I suggest you to buy the following so that you can install the receiver immediately out of box:
1- wiring harness for your specific type of car (mine was toyota corolla)
2- wire connectors : bought 2$ from walmart
One note about installation: There is a blue wire that you might think whether you should connect it to another blue wire from wiring harness. That blue wire should be connected only if you have installed a sub or something similar that needs to be turned on when you turn on the receiver. So if you don't have such things, you should not connect those wires (just cover them with one wire connector to avoid loose wires).

(More customer reviews)I've liked using this radio so far, and have used it with Sirius successfully, but I would advise those looking for a new radio and want it to work sith Sirius Satellite service to look at Kenwood, Audiovox or another brand that offers Sirius ready units. I've tried to put back this unit in a new car I just purchased that replaced one that had been stolen (and had replaced this head unit as well), and found that the process of finding a receiver to work with this head unit is near impossible. The CR-SRT100 receiver that is necessary for Sirius service with this unit has been discontinued by Panasonic and is only available at places like Ebay. Also, some of the newer satellite radio antennas like the TERK SIR3 are geared to work with a single input receiver rather than the dual input receiver that the CR-SRT100 is. The splitter necessary to connect these antennas to this hard to find receiver is equally hard to find as well. You will spend a lot of time trying to find these parts if you try goind down the route I did. This isn't a radio that you can just take to Circuit City and have them "install Sirius" one afternoon and be done with it. It won't be as simple as that.
I called Panasonic about this, and they just told me that the newer 2004 models of Panasonic head unit models are no longer Sirius ready, so don't count on much future support from Panasonic, even though there don't seem to be any public announcements about this. If you want Sirius Satellite Radio, get another brand like Kenwood or Audiovox instead.

(More customer reviews)Bought the DEH-P410ub for my girlfriends 2006 civic, installed this system using Scosche HA1561DGB 2006 Honda Civic DIN and Double Din Kit with Dark Atlas Grey Color Matched and is currently powering 4x Polk Audio DB651 6.5-Inch Coaxial Speakers (Pair, Silver) This head unit provides great clarity and sound quality. The stereo allows every gain and frequency adjustment to be made from the head unit itself, otherwise id have to pull my 2x Infinity Reference 1252w 12-Inch Dual Voice Coil Subwoofer (Silver/Black) in order to make adjustments. Three RCA outs are included, for SUB and speaker AMP outs. The head unit is refined and sophisticated in appearance, unlike the other juvenile-looking alternatives in the market.
Be careful when choosing a Car stereo for your iPod touch/iPhone. There are many receivers out there that have iPod compatibility, however alot of them wont work with the iPod touch/iPhone. I have tested, this is indeed compatible with iPod touch and iPhone (Play tracks, playlists, charging) everything except make calls. An added perk is that you can disconnect the included iPod cable, and play songs from any USB Mass Storage standard device, the stereo can play music from other MP3 players as well as flash drives and SD cards (with a USB adapter). If possible, connect your device via the USB port, instead of the 1/8" AUX jack on the front bezel, this will allow the stereo to internally process the tracks digitally, for better sound quality, and discrete connectivity (e.g. inside the glove compartment) and to enable tracks selection to be controlled by the head unit, instead of fiddling with the MP3 player.

(More customer reviews)I just installed a CDA-9886 in my car. I have always used Alpine products and loved them and this one is the best I have had so far. It plays everything, MP3, WMA, ZUNE, IPOD, AUX and best of all USB. I connected my 3rd Gen Ipod nano and it worked just fine. I have heard people have switched back to 9885 because 9886 does not turn off the ipod when you switch the car off. It may be fixed in the future but this is no issue for me. 9885 does not have USB capability and this is important as far as I am concerned. USB flash drives have no power concerns, lots of storage for cheap and so convenient. Why would you want to leave your ipod connected to the deck anyways? Thieves would break into your car for less than that. Anyways, if you need a nice looking HU that plays all types of media and offers some of the best features available today( bluetooth, voice dial..) I really recommend this unit.

Pioneer AVH-P5200DVD In-Dash DVD Multimedia AV Receiver Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a Pioneer "Fan Boy" for many years, and have owned a little more than a 1/2 dozen of their mobile audio head units. Each Pioneer/Primier HU I purchased got progressivly better as time went on, and each one offered more and more features.
The AVH-5200DVD, so far, has been my favorite Aftermarket HU to date - but my very first video capable unit. I'll break this review down into a few sections.
SELECTION / DIY INSTALLATION: I chose this unit for its single-din design, and motorized screen. This allowed for what I considered a "lower profile" install, and helped keep folks in the parking lot from being too impressed with the stereo to consider breaking into my SUV. I own a 2007 Jeep Commander Sport (no OE Boston Acoustics amplifier for you Commander owners out there), and am pretty protective of my possessions as I'm sometimes not in the nicest of areas.
Installation was a breeze, especially having installed several in the past. As always, you'll want to look up/purchase the single din conversion kit for your particular vehicle. I'm using a Metra branded kit, mostly b/c it was the only option. I also recommend a wiring harness.
Something a little unusual about this unit over previous models is the inclusion of an "external" radio receiver. Its pretty much a small 1"x3"x4" box that contains all the guts for the AM/FM radio. My assumption is that since the screen retracts into the body of the unit, they had to sacrifice some space internally and the radio got the boot. The HU and the radio box simply connect together with a proprietary cable that is included in the packaging.
Something else "new" for me was the inclusion of the parking brake wire. You're supposed to ground this on your parking break to allow you to watch video while parked. Aparantly its not recommended to drive with video playing in the front seat. There are ways to "hack" this - but you'll have to do your own Google search on that.
***NOTE: Make sure you boot up the unit BEFORE you put the dash back together. The screen screen slides out and into a pre-determined angle and distance from the dash - there are controls in the set-up menu that allows you to chose a "pitch" and 2 distances from the face of the dash. I pitched mine back a few clicks for a better viewing angle, and set it up to extend out a little further due to a lip/overhang on the top of my dashboard.FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Once I had the unit installed, I "oooooh'd" and "aaaaaaah'd" over the glossy finish, the smooth action of the screen sliding out and into position. The unit should be fully booted up by the time the screen locks into position.
There are tactile buttons on the exterior that made sense to me. Track Skip/Advance and Reverse, Source, Menu, Mode (for switching from possible GPS mode, regular mode, rear camera, and rear seat video), and of course Eject and Screen "Hide/Open". Since the unit is a touch screen, I feel a little better about using the "physical" buttons to advance songs, rather than having to look away from the road to change tracks.
When the car is shut off, the unit waits a few seconds, beeps to remind you take the removeable anti-theft faceplate with you, and quietly retracts the screen. The anti-theft face is sort of a joke, I'm not sure if it's keyed into this specific unit, and its removal doesn't radically alter the appearance of the unit - so a thief might not know the faceplate is missing until they've smashed their way into the car. INTERFACE: The interface is a little confusing to learn at first, with some items not being labeled. You'll want to play with it a bit before cruising around and trying to operate it. Keep your manual handy in the glove box if you ever get confused. Its quick and easy to pick-up though, and I mastered it within a few short days.
The 7" screen, animations, and graphics are great - fonts and displays are easy to understand a read - even while driving. The unit is a show-stopper, and will impress your passengers the moment the screen slides out and blazes to life.
The touch screen controls are intuitive, though the sliding motion will be a little awkward to you iPhone and BlackBerry Storm users out there as the pages don't "glide" after you've lifted your finger. Very little pressure is needed to activate something on the screen. Just a VERY light tap. You can calibrate the screen too if you need - but mine operates flawlessly out of the box.
The screen is a matte texture (very smart) - which guts down on glare from other light sources like the sure and reduces finger prints/smudges.
You can also change the colors of the external lighting - and the interface colors to match your car's esisting lighting. The ability to make your own custom wallpapers is amazing as well.AUDIO PERFORMANCE: The MOSFET powered amplifier built into the unit pumps crisp clean highs and punchy powerful lows from the Commander's 6 speaker factory speakers (haven't replaced them yet). It currently pushs two 3.5" mid/high speakers, two 6x9" woofers in the front doors, and two 6.5" mid-rangers in the rear doors. The sound fills the cabin of this fairly large SUV nicely with minimal distortion at fairly loud volumes.
I'll be upgrading to a 5-channel amp shortly, using all 3 of the RCA inputs on the reverse of the unit for front, rear, and sub componants.
The menu gives you a great EQ options with 8 bands, bass boost control, 3 "loudness levels", Front/Rear/Sub crossovers, and much much more. Pretty much everything you need to build an audiophile set up.
iPod integration works well. I was a little disappointed that they put the USB input on the front, and not the back as I'm unable to hide the cables for a clean install. It's nice though, for people that want to play files off of a USB flash drive, etc...
I'm using an iPod Classic 160gb loaded down to about 80% capacity. Songs read clear, with song ID tags loading promptly with just a slight delay. There is also a delay when using the SongLink feature - which allows you to search for songs/genre/album/artist based on what is currently playing. In some cases it took several minutes to load up some results. I'm ASSUMING that this is because of the sheer number of songs I have loaded onto the Classic, and the fact that it is a hard drive based player. My wifes flash memory-based iPod loads song data instantly, and has a much faster SongLink retrieval time. So this is probably iPod technology-based, not Pioneer Hu software-based.
I organize all oy my music by genre - so tearing through the organization tree is fast and efficient. The "Alphabet Search" is fantastic too. You slide your finger along the alphabet for the first letter in your search, and a LARGE magnification of that letter appears in the middle of the screen, making it easier and safer to see while driving.
Album art loads a few seconds after the song begins to play and looks pretty sharp - it even animates a little when it loads - making for a flashy display. VIDEO PERFORMANCE: DVD's play just as they're supposed to - like any normal DVD player. Menu items are selected by simply touching the option with your finger. The unit supports several aspect ratios - most of my movie collection is in 16:9 widescreen format - so it fits perfectly. The 16:10 stuff looks great too.
I watched the original Star Wars trilogy (not the new CGI garbage Lucas put out recently) in its entirety on my way too and from Gatlinburg with nary a hiccough or hang up.
It is capable of reading video from an iPod as well. I'm having issues with it reading video from my Classic 160gb, but my wifes flash-based iPod Nano reads perfectly. My issue with the Classic is probably the encoding method I chose to convert the music videos to that I had intended to watch.EXPANDABILITY!!! I, personally, am happy that Pioneer decided to make this unit one of their more "expandable" head units - giving the consumer a boatload of technology to add onto their unit at their leisure and in small increments as your personal cash flow allows.
Just a few of these "upgrades" include:
Bluetooth (if you didn't buy the unit with BT built in - the AVH-5200BT)
HD Radio - I don't personally listen to the radio, unless its a little conservative talk radio, and thats mostly on the AM bands
Sirius/XM Satillite
Rear View Camera
and - most notably - GPS Navigation
You can also add rear seat video monitors utilizing the rear video output on the unit,Now on to some of my gripes about this unit:
No remote control - every single Pioneer HU I've ever purchased came with a remote. This one, for whatever reason - did not. At $500 for a HU, I'd think a remote might not be too much to ask.
Expansion module price - I'm also a little disappointed in the price of the expandsion modules. Dropping $500 on a HU, then another $400 on a GPS unit might seem a little insane - but if you look at the prices of head units that INCLUDE GPS, the price comes out on par, or cheaper, than an "all inclusive" option.
The SOMETIMES slow crawling speed of the iPod library search - even though this is probably iPod related - a 15minute long search for a tune is more than little rediculous. The integrated search on the iPod itself would only take a dozen or so seconds - MAX. Of course - 100-160gb of music/movie files could be a little overwhelming. Perhaps Jobs will offer a little support and help Pioneer find a way to speed up this process.

Pioneer DEHP3100UB SCD Receiver with USB control and LCD Review

(More customer reviews)I have a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 sport wagon. I had replaced the crappy stock double DIN unit with a different but unfortunately also crappy JVC unit, mostly because I wanted a unit that had an aux port for my iPod.
The attractive points of the 3100UB was not just the aux port but the built-in USB port located right on the front panel, facilitating an amazingly easy install and no need to buy additional adapters or route cables around the dash or glove box. The Pioneer site says you need to pick up their USB cable for iPod functionality, but you don't; my standard iPod sync cable works perfectly for both charging and playing with no problems. I suppose if you have an extra $25 to spend you can get the Pioneer cable, but it isn't necessary. You can use USB flash drives as well - but the iPod/iPhone system integration is seamless, easy, and very satisfying.
I knew that in getting a single DIN I would be giving up interface real estate and the convenience of more buttons. However, the "joystick" control on this unit along with the bezel button functions are very easy to use, and do not take a lot of time to figure out. It gets intuitive after a few hours of use and you're set. Compliments too on the included remote, which does just about everything even easier and quicker than the front panel controls. READ THE MANUAL! It's an easy read and the instructions are simple. Once you've got it - you've got it.
The other wonderful feature is the unit's ability to read every audio file format you can throw at it on a CD. MP3 and WMA are pretty much standard on everything, but harder to find are units that read Apple AAC files. This unit does it without hesitation (unless they are iTunes store DRM files, which you can either skip over, or use iTunes Plus on the iTunes store to convert your protected songs to DRM-free for about $.30 a pop). I can fit about 80-90 tunes on one CD and it makes having a large listening library easily available with just a few discs when I don't have my iPod with me. Pioneer's Sound Retriever processing for compressed files takes the quality of these discs up to near-standard CD fidelity - great stuff!
The unit can be expanded in several ways: a Bluetooth module (about $85) which allows for audio streaming and cell phone functionality, HD radio and/or satellite radio, but I have no interest in any of these at this point. It's also got a pair of rear RCA ports for an amp and/or sub-woofer expansion. The unit itself has a 50 watt x 4 channel MOSFET amp and the sound is pristine and puts out a lot of power. The EQ settings are plentiful with both factory presets, user programmable slots with a 3-band eq as well as frequency based adjustments, bass boost and loudness settings, as well as sub-woofer and high/low pass filter options with a fully adjustable crossover. It's ridiculously multi-faceted and you can really fine tune it for your tastes and speakers. I have stock speakers and this unit really makes them shine. I'm going to replace them next month with four Pioneers and I can't wait to hear it.
The detachable faceplate is, of course, a great security feature. The only con I can come up with for the unit is that the display could be brighter. The 4100UB model (same functions across the board but about $25 more) has a much brighter display, but honestly, it's a real "set it and forget it" unit, so it doesn't bother me much.
This unit sells just about everywhere else for $140 and Amazon had it for $125. I'm so happy to have a high-end, iPod and AAC file compatible unit that can be expanded with a nice array of upgrades in the future if I want. It's flexible, powerful, subtle in appearance, and a joy for iPod/iPhone owners. Just plug it in and go! No need to buy anything else. I can't recommend this unit enough. Pioneer quality and broad functionality at this price point is just ridiculous!

I used crimp connectors with the solidly constructed and clearly labeled wiring harness, when i listened to it for the first time i couldn't believe the improvement in sound quality with my OEM speakers! Aside from that, the unit has a clean looking faceplate, a very nice touch panel, and the lcd is the perfect brightness. Setting it all up and getting your eq's dialed in is a breeze. I'm happier with this stereo than many pioneer or alpine head units i've tried. If you're looking to upgrade your factory head unit with one for a great price and nice, simple features you just found it.

(More customer reviews)This unit does all it should. it plays cds, the radio, and an ipod with an auxiliary cable. the buttons are very small, and you can't read the tiny labels, which means in a way you'll have to remember your way around the interface. at night, the backlighting is rather dim, and green. the buttons are so small, you can't read them against a back light. they are just kinda there are a reference. the unit fit right into my '92 accord, so that was good. also (a weird quirk for me) the random function plays repeats within a given playlist. that means on a 10 track cd, there is a chance you could hear track 2 twice before you hear track 4 on random. how do they let this stuff slip? on the other hand, if you are listening to the cd sequnetially (track 1, 2, 3 and so on) and then turn on random, it won't automatically change songs just because you switched it on. i have seen this thoughtless feature in other cd players before.
SO- for the price it isn't bad. it does all it should. will read mildly scratched cd's pretty well, and burned cds are never an issue. if you will be bothered by a mediocre interface, shop around a bit. i'm pleased for what it's worth. that's my 2 cent.

(More customer reviews)I decided to replace my CDXGT610ui with a rear USB -AND- rear AUX after finding out that front inputs probably weren`t the best idea if you have a moose of a dog that rides up front with you on adventures like I do. After much research I once again wound up at Sony`s doorstep.
The one thing I was leery of was the display, my eyes are really light sensitive at night and I couldn`t find anything in the specs that said the background could be turned off and I don`t need any swimming Dolphins or random cityscape up in my face at night since the head unit mounts squarely in the middle of the dash. I took a chance anyways and HAPPY DAY! the menu has an option for.......Display Off, with this enabled you have no wallpapers or distracting movies just track info
(and the clock which try as I may cannot be turned off)
The annoying beep on the other hand can also easily be turned off
Another great surprise I found out after unpacking it was that they put one Aux input on a three foot cable out the back of the unit which makes it very easy to remote mount alongside the USB cable which is plenty long enough.
Flash drive load times are much improved (very fast!)
The face plate goes back into position quickly after loading a cd
The display is very readable in bright sunlight and can be dimmed at night and the button colors can be changed which is a nice feature at night as well.
It pulls in radio stations like a champ.
Sound quality? WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The DM+ and DSO make all the difference in the world and once you get the filters set up right for whatever speakers/system you`re running I doubt you`ll find anything that sounds better even with some extra add on module that unlocks some supersecret hidden eq settings.
My system is pretty basic.......
The head unit goes through an Alpine ERE G180 passive EQ, passes through an Infinity four channel and a Dual mono amp into stock tweets, Dual 6 1/2`s, 6X9`s and two 12`s and the sound quality is phenominal with CD`s, flash drives and a Rockboxed Sansa
Gotta say though, not a big fan of the volume knob controlling other functions but so far it hasn`t been that big of a deal. The "back" feature is very handy and the controls are well laid out and easy to use quick search is awsome showing folders and individual file names in those folders for those times you`ve gotta hear that one song. Plenty of Low Level outs this time (thank you thank you)
