I was skeptical that a synthetic ATF would make that much difference in my fiancé's 2003 Protege5 with 85k miles, but it shifts like new again AND fuel economy has gone up from around 29.5 MPG average to ~31 MPG. The difference in fuel economy alone will pay off the cost of the fluid and filter well before changing it again in another 30k.
About a year ago I had done a full flush with cheap Wal-Mart fluid in preparation for putting synthetic in since the previous owner had never changed the fluid. It shifted progressively harder the longer it was in. I had waited longer than I intended, and I should have done this a LONG time ago in both our cars.
On a P5, you can just drain the fluid (approx 3 quarts) and replace or do a full flush (buy 8 quarts and a new filter) by starting the engine, allowing half a quart out at a time, refilling, and repeating until you get clean fluid. I chose the latter. If you've even remotely comfortable with a wrench, for about $100 you can make your transmission shift like it should have right off the lot!
